A firm and confident foundation in the core skills of English in Year 7, 8 and 9 paves the way for later success at GCSE level and beyond!
Key Stage 3 is the perfect time to instil a love of reading and writing and it is important that teaching is approached in a way that fosters exploration and curiosity. I will focus on building the core skills needed for exam success in English – however I also aim to encourage a broader knowledge base.
What I can help with:
The transition from KS2-KS3 English – securing those key foundational skills through instruction and support in phonics, grammar and spelling to ensure accuracy and confidence.
Reading comprehension and analysis – using a variety of fiction and non-fiction texts to shore up reading for meaning and making inferences based on language, themes, characters and structure and placing it in the wider context (a key skill for GCSE).
Essay writing – learning to get those brilliant ideas down on paper in a structured, coherent and concise manner is integral to success in all exam subjects, along with being an essential component of powerful communication later in life. I will support with scaffolding and model essays, key phrases and sentences to help introduce ideas and guidance on planning answers to introduce concepts of time management.
Creative writing – fiction and non-Fiction. We look at captivating audiences with engaging, informative or persuasive pieces. We will explore writing as an expression of voice and self, linking in literature and building ‘vocabulary banks’ with words in context to support sophisticated communication.
